What are chilblains and how to treat them?

Discover our suggestion on how to treat chilblains in a natural way using essential oils and other recipes such as teas and lotions that will help you to deal with these reactions to the cold.

Winter comes and the coldest days are unforgiving on your skin. At this time there are several people who complain about the cold and as if thats not enough some still have a reaction to the cold thats called chilblain.

These skin lesions are caused by the contraction of the superficial blood vessels, especially in the extremities where the circulation itself is sometimes not good. The skin in these areas does not heat up and this causes lesions on the skin, in the form of irritation, blistering or swelling with or without pruritus.

To treat is to prevent. What to do?

  • You must avoid major temperature changes. For example between hot and cold water, or having warm hands and coming into contact with cold water. But also the accentuated temperature differences between spaces.
  • Avoid being in front of heaters. I know! They're you're best friends! But think again!
  • Wear suitable clothing for example gloves and thermal socks that help maintain the temperature of the extremities.
  • Moisturize the skin of the hands and feet frequently, focusing on massage as a therapy.
  • Do not wear shoes or tight clothing when it is cold.
  • Do physical activity. This improves your circulation while creating a healthy body.

How to treat chilblains?

First of all, it is necessary to understand that it is a circulation problem created by the cold with the help of temperature differences. So we must see that the main therapy here is massage, not the cream. Creams or oils help because they can have a vasodilating and moisturizing effect, but the massage is what promotes good circulation.

So remember to massage at least 10 to 15 minutes in these areas, but they can be longer, depending on the condition of your skin.

  • For topical application massage the affected areas with Fractionated Coconut Oil and Ginger Essential Oil. Adjust the temperature of the coconut oil to the area where you are going to apply it. You can slightly heat the coconut oil in a double boiler if necessary. Apply 5 to 6 drops of Ginger Essential Oil to the affected area. (If you want you can add 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil to help calm skin irritation).
  • You can also alternately mix Coconut Oil with Clove Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, Black Pepper or Marjoram.
  • Some get along with the Rosemary Essential Oil and Peppermint, mix 8 to 10 drops of each oil in a cup and apply to the affected area. You can also add Vitamin E in oil form to make it more skin friendly.
  • Make ginger tea, ginseng or gorse tea, as they help improve circulation as they are vasodilators and improve metabolic action.
  • Do not forget to use a good moisturizer to prevent the complication of symptoms. For example SPA Hands & Body Lotion. It has no smell and was made to be used simple or mixed with essential oils. Apply at least 3 times a day or as needed. Massage to stimulate circulation.

In the application of these recipes there may be some moments of slight discomfort or some small pain that are part of the therapy. Essential oils are very concentrated substances so believe me, they are natural, but they are effective!

Consult with your doctor if you:

  • experience difficulties or severe pain in the affected area that prevent good mobility;
  • symptoms (for example, redness or pain) get worse or if new symptoms appear;
  • have a fever.
